For off road adventures there are no better chains than Rud Grip 4×4 chains. A few weeks ago I had a chance to mount my sets on our Toyota FJ Cruiser and test them out in the snow on Rampart Range near Colorado Springs. I must say they performed flawlessly. Two full sets are required when running chains on a 4×4 mounted on both the front and rear wheels to ensure equal traction distribution.
These chains mount fast. I was able to get all 4 chains mounted in under 30 minutes. The mounting system is cool and does not require the vehicle to be moved. The rear retainer is a fixed length steel loop that is connected after the chain is slid into place. Due to this design, fitment is very important. Once the chain is pulled into place, the front section is connected and then the tightening chain is looped through a clasp and then pulled tight. Get in and drive a short distance and then tighten the chains once again and the install is complete. The installation is not the only unique part about these chains, they have additional traction features also.
The chains have a section linking the cross links that provides side ways slip control. This part of the design can help with both cornering and side slip if you need to cross a slick side hill. The chains are constructed of case hardened alloy steel and should wear very well. There are also a few repair links provided with each set. There is a great installation video located on the site “Tire Chain Dealer“
If you need chains and plan to use them more than once I highly recommend that you get these quality chains rather than spending money on traditional chain. I carry these chains for both winter and summer conditions. In the Utah desert chains are sometimes required to be able to traverse muddy roads.
