I did a little research on Monday about getting the FJ re-geared to 4.55 gears and there is a big hold up. The 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser uses a new carrier and gears in the rear differential. I had the dealership look up both the 2009 and the 2010 and the part numbers are different. I then called East Coast Gears and they have the new gears ready to go into production but are waiting for market demand to go up. The estimate from them is 8 to 10 months before they have gears available.
So what can I do to re-gear the FJ. The first option is to find a used rear axle assemble from to 2007-2009 FJ and do a total axle swap and then get the old model axle re-geared. The second option is to purchase an after market axle from All Pro Off Road. The aftermarket axle would need to use an ARB locker and the cost be much higher.
I’ll be putting some thought into this. I have my old wheels and tires (about $2500.00) sitting in the shed ready to go but I can’t run them with stock gears. Sort of a dilemma. The FJ is still running the stock street tires and looks woefully in need of a more aggressive tire….
