Day 4 found us heading back into Moab to take the Sand Flats road as access the La Sal Loop Road and parts of the Kokopelli trail. Our objective was to camp near Gateway Colorado off the Dolores River.
The Sand Flats road follows the incline up to the base of the mountains. Along the road there are lots of classic SE Utah formations as well as a wonderful overlook of Castle Valley. Once we topped out we attempted to follow a section of jeep road that is the Kokopelli. However, we were turned back by the heavy over growth and the desire to not totally scratch up the sides of the FJ.
We continued on the Sand Flats road and finally encounter the paved La Sal loop road. Turning back northeast we followed the loop road and enjoyed the spectacular views of the Moab canyon country.
We left the La Sal Loop road at its junction with the John Brown Creek Road and headed east towards Gateway. It was getting late and time to start looking for a camp site. Much of this area is private and belongs to a large ranching operation.
We finally found a road that heads out to a spot called Dolores Point. The road was graded and looked like it had recently been upgraded for the Uranium prospecting that is taking place. We found a fantastic camping location that over looked the Dolores valley and would get us early sun.
