I had to trade in my HTC Mogul Cell Phone a few months ago because it was broken. The replacement phone that I received back from Sprint is an HTC Touch Pro. The Mogul had an external antenna port so I was able to wire it directly to the antenna on my roof for improved reception. The HTC Touch Pro Does not have an external port so I am no longer able to hook it up to the antenna.
In the summer months I volunteer as a trained Skywarn spotter in El Paso County, Colorado. The eastern part of the county, where most of the weather happens, does not have great cell phone coverage. Last year the roof mounted antenna greatly improved my cell phone coverage and my ability keep my live weather radar feed active on my car PC.
To keep the enhanced coverage with the new cell phone I decided to add a cell phone amplifier that uses a passive couple to the cell phone. The amp is mounted in the center console and the passive antenna couple is through the cell phone cradle. The amp will boost the output power to up to 3 watts and the electronics ensure that the power is within appropriate specifications.
I have done some testing with the amp and with it turned on my phone reception indicator (S meter) will go from 1 bar to 9 bars. This should greatly extend my coverage when out on the plains of eastern Colorado.
